The Minister for Labour Affairs, Mr. Billy Kelleher TD, has signed an amendment to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations (SI 504 of 2006). The purpose of this amendment is to defer the implementation date by which workers undertaking certain tasks must have completed the CSCS training programme and be in possession of an appropriate CSCS card.
The amendment was made by Minister Kelleher following careful consideration of submissions made to him by industry and employer bodies and subsequent consultation with the Health and Safety Authority. The specified tasks to which the amendment relates are mobile tower scaffolds, signing, lighting and guarding on roads, locating underground services and shotfiring.
According to Paula Gough, Programme Manager with the Health and Safety Authority, “This amendment grants additional time to ensure that all relevant workers have received the appropriate training and are in possession of the relevant CSCS card. I urge all key parties to take advantage of this extension now and not delay in ensuring workers have successfully completed their training.”
The Safety Health and Welfare at Work (Construction)(Amendment) Regulations (SI 130 2008) stipulates that for the above specified tasks the requirements of the Construction Regulations 2006 will now apply from 6th July 2009.
